We recently spoke with singer songwriter Shaharah Sinclair, a former patient at Shriners Hospitals for Children®- Canada who donated the proceeds from the launch of her latest CD You & I to the hospital. Here are her thoughts on how her hospital experience has shaped her life:
Q: What were you treated for at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Canada?
A: I was treated for a femur bone deficiency (a nonhereditary disorder in which the upper leg bone does not grow at the same rate as the rest of the body) from the ages of 7 to 14.
Q: Did your experience at the Canada Shriners Hospital influence you?
A: Absolutely! My hospital experience had a very positive impact on my self-confidence, determination and gratitude. I feel like I can be anything I want to be, despite my disability, and I have such an appreciation for things that most people take for granted.
Q: What motivated you to donate $3,500 from the proceeds of your CD launch to the hospital?
A: This was so overdue! I've wanted to work with the hospital for years, but life got in the way for way too long.
Q: You recently posted a video of a visit to the hospital. What was it like to return there?
A: It was incredible to be back. I sang my song Stronger, which was inspired by my hospital experience. I was so overwhelmed with joy to see the staff and catch up.
Q: How did you get started in music?
A: Music has always been a part of my life. It's my favorite form of expression. My dad is
my biggest inspiration — aside from inheriting his singing voice, he was always playing music featuring Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Stevie Wonder, Teddy Pendergrass and Freddy Jackson around the house. I loved it. I decided to pursue music professionally in 2010 when I released my first album, No Turning Back.
Q: Any more big projects on the horizon that your fans should know about?
A: Right now I'm focused on promoting the new album and am hoping to tour across Canada and possibly Europe this coming summer.
